What is herbal medicine?
A herbalist is medically trained to use plants as medicines. Herbalists are trained in clinical diagnosis, plant pharmacology and prescribing. A training lasts from 3-6 years and includes all aspects of anatomy and physiology, clinical examination and clinical practice. The herbal therapeutics aspect of the training involves botany, pharmacogsony, materia medica and all the requirements to dispense plant medicines safely.
Who we support
Betonica School of Herbal Medicine
The Betonica medical herbalist training programme covers a wide range of topics, from materia medica, botany and pharmacology, to anatomy and physiology and clinical skills (to name just a few). We are passionate about community clinics and education, organic growing and field to dispensary medicine.
The course content and assessment are at the same level as a BSc (Level 6 in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications), but the final award you will receive for successfully completing the course will be a diploma. The title of diploma gives us the flexibility to combine academic learning with clinical training.
The programme is what’s called blended learning, much of it is home study but you are required to attend seminar weekends from September until June. Year 1 students are required to attend one seminar weekend every 2nd month and the Year 2 – 4 students are required to attend seminar weekend once a month. In order to complete the programme, you will need to attend 80% of the seminar weekends.
White Crane Academy
The White Crane Academy (WCA) was founded to provide a practical and practitioner led approach to learning Chinese Herbal Medicine. WCA course leaders are experienced practitioners, teachers, often researchers, who want to share their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of herbal practitioner.
